Michael asked the big question right away: could Alan Thicke have been saved? John first pointed out that Alan benefited from a proper response from 9-1-1: rapid treatment and transport and rapid intervention once he arrived at the hospital. Alan suffered form an aortic rupture, which is a truly life-threatening emergency that progresses so quickly that often times patients just don’t make it, which is what happened in Alan’s case. John found it hard to believe that the outcome could’ve been any different.

The following are warning signs of an aortic rupture:
- sharp, tearing pain (the worst pain you’ve ever felt in your life)
- back pain
- excessive sweating
If you experience any of those signs, get to an emergency room as quickly as possible. But how can you prevent it?
How to Prevent Aortic Rupture
To prevent a sudden health crisis like an aortic rupture, there are certain things you can do. First, maintain a healthy weight. Second, manage your blood pressure. Finally, wear a seatbelt. A sudden jerking movement toward the steering wheel can literally tear the aorta and a seatbelt can help prevent that.
