Dr Oz: Blood Sugar Control + ‘Almost Christmas’ Stars
Because so many people indulge in sweet treats around the holidays that cause their blood sugar to skyrocket, Dr Oz wanted to reveal how to keep your blood sugar stable. He welcomed some of the stars of the newest holiday film Almost Christmas. Mo’Nique, Romany Malco , J.B. Smoove, and Omar Epps were thrilled to sit down with Dr Oz to talk about the most wonderful time of year and how they maintain their health.
Mo’Nique explained that her mom is a double amputee as the result of neglect. Because of that, she learned the importance of moderation and balance. Romany was lucky enough to date someone who introduced him to healthy eating, and he learned a couple decades ago that sugar was the true enemy.
They all joked with J.B. that he would eat a doughnut between two cinnamon rolls, soaked in an energy drink chased with a candy bar. He laughed and agreed, saying he doesn’t only have a sweet tooth, because he has sweet teeth. Omar said he knows how to balance, but he wants to be able to indulge too.
Dr Oz: Blood Sugar Spikes & Your Mood
To show what happens when you eat a sweet treat, Dr Oz had the four actors participate in a demonstration. When you eat a high-sugar food, your blood sugar sky rockets and insulin increases, but then your blood sugar crashes and suddenly you’re hungry and irritable. So what can you do to better control your blood sugar to keep that from happening?
Dr Oz: How To Control Your Blood Sugar
Mo’Nique revealed that she’s all about the cinnamon around the holidays, but is it good for her health? Dr Oz explained that cinnamon is great for helping control your blood sugar, so go ahead and add it where you can!
On the other hand, you may want to avoid extra caffeine around the holidays because it can raise your blood sugar. Additionally, it can keep you awake and a lack of sleep can spike your blood sugar as well. Meditation is another great way to help control your stress and blood sugar. Romany loves wheat grass shots, which are loaded with vitamins and minerals and also help your blood sugar.
It’s always a great idea to choose treats that have some benefits, whenever possible. For example, try reaching for dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. You could also use dates or date sugar to make sweet treats, as opposed to regular table sugar.
