Doctor Oz discussed how the products we are flushing down our toilets and putting down our sinks are causing polluted waters to change the hormones in frogs and fish, so that we are getting abnormal fish and frogs (where they have both male and female organs). Water is the source of life- we use water for cooking, drinking, cleaning and bathing. We are finding endocrine disruptors in our water supply which may be causing the increase in cancer cases we are seeing in America. There has been a 50% increase in testicular cancer since 1975. And breast cancer rates in America for middle aged women have gone from 1% in 1975 to 12% now. Phthalates are a pollutant found in shampoo, lotion, baby powder and other beauty products. BPA or Bisphenol-A is a pollutant found in plastic containers. In fact, there are 1000 pollutants in our water supply, and only 91 contaminants in our water supply are regulated.
Dr. Alan Greene, author of Feeding Baby Green: The Earth Friendly Program for Healthy, Safe Nutrition During Pregnancy, Childhood, and Beyond, said that our polluted water supply may be causing earlier puberty in females.
Gary Ginsberg, author of What’s Toxic, What’s Not,said that BPA or Bisphenol-A has been banned in the state of Connecticut from all baby products because of how toxic it is. BPA is found in hard plastics, the lining of canned vegetables, hard plastic bottles and other plastic containers. BPA comes out of the plastic and actually goes into your food. BPA is so common that 93% of people have it in them right now.
In addition to BPA and Phthalates, other toxins are being found in our water supply including Atrazine, Carbamazepine, Acetaminophen and Sulfamethoxazole
(an antibiotic). All of these medications are poisoning our water supply, so instead of flushing old medicine or prescriptions down the toilet, throw your leftover medications out in the trash along with cat litter or coffee grounds. Some pharmacies are also having Take Back days so that people can return old medicine to their pharmacies.
Phthalates are a toxin found in body cream and other personal items. Phthalates work like the estrogen hormone, which make them dangerous for us to use (especially on our children). Phthalates are used to make products waterproof or to keep a fragrance on our bodies for longer periods, which is why we should try to avoid any products that use fragrance.
A few other tips are to skip products with parabens and do not use plastics with a recycling symbol on the bottom of 3, 6 or 7. Plus, do not microwave in plastic containers.
