Dr Oz: Gallstones & Gallbladder Disease
Dr Oz did a segment on how to prevent Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease. If you are a female, over 40 and overweight, you are at a higher risk for having Gallstones. Do you know what foods can prevent Gallstones? And which foods just make it worse? Here is what Doctor Oz said is the latest scoop:
Dr Oz: Gallstone Symptoms
– An intense pain that starts in the upper right side of your torso and moves up to cause pain in your right shoulder or back
– Lasts over 5 hours
– Causes vomiting or nausea
Dr Oz said that when you eat a fatty food, it gets dissolved in your stomach and bile is squeezed down to help digest it. Sometimes though, if you have too much cholesterol, then it clumps together and forms what Doctor Oz described as “big piles of mud” that can form crystals and turn into Gallstones. There are three different sizes of Gallbladder Stones. The smallest ones are pea-sized and they are actually the most dangerous. The largest ones are around the size of a golf ball and are actually the safest, even though that may seem counter-intuitive at first. The reason for this is that the larger ones cannot go down into your intestinal system because they are too large. However, the smaller pea-sized Gallstones can get stuck in the duct itself and that can kill you.
Dr Oz: Foods That Prevent Gallstones
Dr Oz said that Canola Oil and Brazil Nuts both decrease your risk of getting Gallstones because they have monounsaturated fats. Coffee is the secret weapon though because coffee forces your Gallbladder to contract so that it stays clean and free of Gallbladder Stones. Doctor Oz also said that you should avoid pasta and sugary soda like Ginger Ale, because these increase your risk of getting Gallstones.
