Dr Oz: Must-Have Kitchen Gadget For Soups & Smoothies
If there’s one kitchen gadget everyone needs, Dr Mark Hyman believes it’s an immersion blender. You can get one for relatively cheap, and use it to make practically everything. Mark showed viewers just how easy it is to make mashed vegetables out of steamed veggies, a little water, and some seasoning. The tool even comes apart for easy cleaning!
Mark’s most favorite way to use an immersion blender is to make soup. You can throw whole tomatoes, chopped onions, water or broth, carrots, spices, and more into a pot to cook, then just use the immersion blender to get rid of the chunks! Perhaps my personal favorite use for an immersion blender is to make a smoothie. Pick your favorite Dr Oz smoothie recipe and instead of a blender, throw all the ingredients in a mason jar then blend them up with the immersion blender.

Dr Oz: Best Way To Clean Your Grill
Dr Oz then wanted to take a closer look at outdoor kitchen gadgets that can make your BBQ easier and healthier. To find out exactly what those are, he went straight to America’s Test Kitchen. Dr Oz is both a grill and a gadget guy, so he was hoping to be wow’ed. First, if you have a hard time cleaning your grill, Jack Bishop tried the Grillbot but said “the promise is better than the performance.”
Instead, just go for the old-fashioned grill brush. The secret is getting the grill hot first and then using good ‘ole elbow grease.
Dr Oz: Grilling Gadgets Worth Your Money
To boost the flavor of your grilled food without all the calories, Jack loves a good smoke. He suggested using hickory chips and soaking them in cold water for about an hour to prevent them from immediately burning. You can then put them in a cast-iron smoker box underneath the grates.
To check the temperature of your meat, you can use a Bluetooth thermometer that will send a notification to your phone when your meat is done. Lastly, there’s a defrosting tray that claims to defrost your meat in half the time. Dr Oz’s medical team tested the trays for an hour and fifteen minutes and found that although the most expensive tray seemed to work best, there was only a 1 degree difference between that and the counter after an hour. The best way to defrost your steak is to put it in your fridge overnight. Believe it or not, you can actually throw a frozen steak, chicken breast, or pork chop on the grill while it’s still frozen, you’ll just have a bit of a crust on it.
Dr Oz: Corn On The Cob In A Cooler
Next, Dr Oz was excited to reveal a few outdoor cooking hacks to make your summertime get-together easier. For an easy way to cook corn on the cob for a crowd, put a roasting pan in the bottom of a cooler and then add in the shucked corn. Add about two kettles of boiling water and close the cooler. In about 30 minutes you have cooked corn on the cob!
Also, grill masters claim that ice is the key to perfect grilled food. Take an ice cube and bury it inside the raw burger patty, then place it immediately on the grill. You’ll be left with a crispy outside and a moist inside. Finally, for the best way to serve watermelon, try this trick. Use a serrated knife to cut the watermelon in half then place it flesh-side-down. Slice it in 2-inch sections, then turn and slice in 2-inch sections again. You’ll be left with sticks you can pull out and eat individually.
Dr Oz: Importance Of Reading To Your Kids
On a different note, Dr Oz wanted to take a few minutes to explain the importance of reading to your children. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommend parents read to their kids from the day they are born, and every single day after. Over 40% of American children don’t have any books at home. George Halvorson explained that it’s most important to read to kids under the age of three because that’s when the neurons in the brain become strong. Reading is necessary brain exercise.
Low-income families are reading an average of 30 hours over five years, while higher income families read as much as 1,500 hours in that same time frame. It’s mainly because those parents don’t know the true importance of reading to their children. Reading to your children also helps form a bond, and helps them realize that reading is fun. Only one in 10 parents admit to reading to their kids 15 minutes a day. Dr Oz challenged everyone to contribute to the Books Across America Program at a UPS store with any unused books, to help low-income families.
