Dr Oz: Food Allergies
On today’s show, Dr Oz was joined by Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, to discuss whether food allergies could be the culprit as to why you are not losing weight. Dr. Hyman continued, stating that you may be packing on the pounds because of allergies to the foods you eat, and in order to start losing weight, you should eliminate these foods.
Dr Oz stated that the #1 complaint he hears in his office is that his patients sasy that they’re doing everything right but just can’t seem to lose the weight, so the myth Dr Oz explored on today’s show: You’re to blame for your weight gain.
This is most definitely a myth.
(Unless of course you just had a whole pizza and a bucket of cheese fries, but then technically, wouldn’t the pizza and the fries be to blame?)
Anyway, Dr. Hyman explained that food allergies caused inflammation that eventually drives the vicious cycle of weight gain and could lead to obesity. He told Doctor Oz that you can gain up to 30 pounds per year due to allergies to dairy. (Too bad I’m not allergic to dairy, cuz that sounds like a good reason to me!) When people think of being allergic to food, they tend to think of acute allergies (peanuts.) This type of allergy affects only 2-5 percent of the population. What you may not realize is that 60 percent of the population is allergic to dairy, which causes slow weight gain.
Dr Oz: Food Allergy – Meat & Dairy
You may be allergic to the main sources of dairy, such as milk and cheese and other obvious dairy foods, but did you know there is dairy contained in other foods, such as muffins, cakes, cookies, and chocolate? These products contain whey.
Meat and fish:
-when meat is processed, flavor enhancers containing dairy are used. (canned tuna) Instead, try kosher meats.
Dr Oz: Bread Allergy
-bread contains a lot of milk powder and whey. To be sure it does not contain dairy products, read the label or ask your baker.
Dr Oz Protein Bar Allergy
-These products may contain whey. Read the label on the product.
Dr. Hyman stated that he’s had patients who have had dairy allergies and when they got rid of the dairy, they had actually lost weight. They also got rid of other issues such as joint pain, fatigue, congestion and irritable bowels. These issues are linked to food allergies.
