A low-carb diet is often the best way to go for many people, but it could lead to a problem that most don’t expect: constipation. Dr Oz was joined by a woman named Addy who opened up about her constipation issues ever since starting a low-carb diet six months ago. She’s probably only finding relief about two times a week, and even then it’s not without a great amount of effort. If you’re only pooping every other day or even less often than that, you’re likely suffering from constipation, especially if it’s usually difficult when you do go.
Dr Oz explained that carbohydrates act as a sponge when you eat them, which helps to moisten your poop. The fruits and vegetables are loaded with fiber to help keep everything moving through your digestive system, and the water you drink acts as lubricant. A healthy, balanced diet like that, leads to smooth bowel movements. A low-carb diet gets rid of the fiber and adds more protein and cheese, which lacks those nutrients that help your bowels. It may be good for your waist line, but it’s not as good for your digestion.

Before you quit your low-carb diet, try adding more foods that are high in fiber but follow the diet. Try eating more pears and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. Of course, you should also continue to drink a lot of water. You’d be surprised to know how much of a difference just getting enough water can make.
Dr Oz: Constipation Remedies
Dr Oz then wanted to share a few more fixes that would work for everyone struggling with constipation, including those not on a low-carb diet. He first suggested magnesium citrate, because it can help relax the intestinal muscles. You only need to take it once a day, or else you’ll end up with diarrhea. You can also get magnesium from foods like spinach, avocado, pumpkin seeds, or beans. Another great remedy is coffee! The caffeine in coffee can stimulate your bowels and get things moving.
Dr Oz wanted to make sure his viewers know that it’s not such a good idea to hold it in if you feel the urge to poop. It can cause your bowel to weaken, which hinders the ease of future bowel movements. You could also try an abdominal massage. Lie on your back with your knees bent, and place your hand over your belly button. Rub your belly counter-clockwise, starting at your bellybutton and going in wider circles as you go around.
