What can you do if you think you are in one of these relationships? Here were Dr Brenda’s recommendations.
Be specific about support.
Tell the person what you need and the best way they can support you. For example, Susan could put together a menu of her dietary needs for her husband Bill to cook.
Set and stick to boundaries.
Create and explain boundaries so that both parties know what is acceptable and what is not. Don’t let anyone make you feel ashamed.
Always have the last word about your health.
No one else is as invested in the consequences of your health than you, so stand your ground when it comes to healthy eating.
Dr Oz: Taking Back Your Power
Doctor Oz put Jennifer and Valerie on the spot, and Jennifer agreed that she should take back her power and refuse to let her mother bully her.
Susan said she can show her husband all the other ways he contributes to their relationship and the value he brings to her life. Dr Wade agreed that appreciation is an important aspect of any connection.
Dr Oz: I Am Worthy Mantra
Tynetta was also in a position to change her friendship. She said that she plans to start by changing her behavior and taking responsibility for herself.
Dr Wade taught Tynetta a mantra, because she said that she knew Tynetta was holding on to negative feelings from her childhood: “I am worthy and I am deserving, and I love me.”
Dr Oz: Your Healthiest Life Ever Review
Dr Brenda Wade offered each of the pairs the chance to participate in a live, six-week teleseminar, “Your Healthiest Love Ever.” During those six weeks, she promised to coach people through the Alive Model.
