Dr Oz: Anxiety Over Recent Terror Attacks
Paris, Colorado Springs, and San Bernardino were all places of terror that turned our country upside down and put us all on edge. More people being more on edge now than they were in the weeks directly after the September 11 terror attacks. With approximately one active shooter incident every three weeks, it’s no wonder everyone is terrified, so what can we do to help alleviate our anxiety?
Dr Oz: Understand The Realities
It’s understandable to be scared, but Dr Gail Saltz said it’s important to understand the realities, knowing that you’re actually more likely to be struck by lightening than you are to be involved in a terror attack. “Facts over fear,” she said.
Pastor Van Moody said what you really need to fear is fear itself. Terror wins when we isolate ourselves because no one has a right to tell us how to live our lives. Go ahead and go to those public places, and don’t let the terrorists win. In Paris, citizens went right back to the cafes and restaurants, not only to send a message to the terrorists, but to diminish their own fears, and it certainly sent a message.
Dr Oz: Try Thought Exposure
Approximately 71% of people think about terror threats 1-2 times a day, according to a DoctorOz.com poll. Dr Saltz said if you’re having intrusive thoughts, let them “float by” using thought exposure. Go into a quiet room and say whatever it is you’re afraid of out loud for 10 minutes straight. Elaborate and think of the worst case scenario, and you’ll realize that you can’t keep it up for more than 10 minutes without getting bored. That will allow your mind to let go of the thought. Do that on a daily basis and over time, the intrusive thoughts will diminish.
As for kids, you need to make sure that kids understand the importance of living their best life right now, but also have a plan. If the worst were to happen you want your kids to know what to do.
Dr Oz: What To Do During Active Shooter Situation
One of the best ways to relieve anxiety is to prepare yourself with a plan in case of an emergency. Dr Oz welcomed Bill Stanton a former NYC officer to share his best tips so that you know what to do during an emergency. You first need to make an assessment and then use the exits that you already found when you entered the room. Once you get out of the building, leave with your empty hands wide apart, high in the air to show law enforcement you’re not a threat.
But if you can’t get out, you’ll be forced to hide. First, you need to build a barricade in the room you’re in by wedging furniture against the door. Come up with a plan with the other people that are with you such as throwing furniture at the attacker. But what if your furniture isn’t big or strong enough to barricade the door? You can actually use your belt to cinch the the hinge at the top of the door to keep it from opening. Your phones should be on silent, the lights should be off, and you should be making as little noise as possible.
You could also use a lighter to set off the sprinkler sytem to throw the bad guy off their game. The average incident usually lasts only 10 minutes so do whatever it takes until it’s over. Common sense will save your life!
Dr Oz: Fight Back Against An Attacker
Finally there are times where you may need to fight. Grab a fire extinguisher to create a fog or make the floor slick. It’s also very heavy which means you could throw it at someone if you needed to. You could also attack someone with a pair of scissors if you catch them off guard. When your life is on the line, you have to do whatever it takes.
Dr Oz: Emergency Kit Essentials
Bill Stanton then shared essential items to keep in your emergency kit. First was a tactical flashlight, which is a strobe that can disorient an attacker. You should also get a door stopper, which can keep an intruder out of your room. You should also carry pepper spray to help you fight for your life. Keep the items inside a makeup kit so you can grab it quickly when you need to.
Dr Oz: Doctor Oz Website
Before the end of his show, Dr Oz surprised Dr Richard in the audience, sharing a story about how he tried to convince a couple to give him the Doctor Oz website, but they kept turning his lawyers away, until finally he called them himself. The couple explained that they were saving the website for him so they would gladly give it to him, not knowing it was Dr Oz’s lawyers the whole time! Dr Oz’s parents who were actually sitting in the audience cracked up at the story!
