Doctor Oz did a show called “The Pulse” to teach us about what is hot in health now. Dr Oz was joined by Roshini Raj, author of “What the Yuck,” Donnica Moore, author of “Woman’s Health for Life,” and Jeff Gardere. Dr Oz covered topics ranging from airport full body scanner dangers to a virus that causes obesity. Lots of very interesting health-related news!
Adenovirus 36 Causes Childhood Obesity?
Millions of Americans struggle with obesity, but could it be something other than genetics, a bad diet and lack of exercise? Could you “catch” obesity? And could a virus cause obesity? Dr Oz said a study recently concluded that children who had Adenovirus 36 were more than 4 times as likely to have Childhood Obesity. Donnica Moore said that there was a significant weight difference of 35 pounds found, and also they found that when you inject animals with Adenovirus 36 that they produce more fat cells. Roshini Raj is more skeptical and said that the study did not show cause and effect, and that for most people who are trying to lose weight, the virus is not the answer. Jeff Gardere had a very valid concern, which is that this is sending the wrong message to the public because some people might begin to think they should stay away from obese or overweight people because they could “catch” the virus or obesity.
Corn Sugar: New Name for High Fructose Corn Syrup
Dr Oz said that the Corn Refinery Association wants to change the name for High Fructose Corn Syrup to Corn Sugar. One reason is surely because consumers are becoming educated and have dramatically decreased their consumption of high fructose corn syrup. Dr Oz said that other foods have been successfully renamed. Prunes are now called dried plums (though I still call them prunes!), and Low Erucic Acid Rapeseed is the old name for Canola Oil. Americans should be cutting sugar our of their diet and becoming healthy overall, so whether it is called corn sugar or regular sugar or high fructose corn syrup, we should stop eating all of them. As soon as consumers make a shift, the companies will respond by producing foods with less sugar and corn syrup. As Dr Oz said, we can rename vodka to happy juice or sugar to white dust… but it is still the same product!
Airport Full Body Scanner Dangers
Dr Oz said there are 1000’s of full body scanners in airports already and another 800 are on their way. These full body scanners can see under your clothing and are supposed to help us stay safe. The TSA says that full body scanners or Backscanners are not harmless, but some people are worried about the radiation people will be exposed to over time.
