Dr Oz: Escape Your Weight Fate
Do you look exactly like someone in your family? Dr Oz said that we can inherit features that are beautiful or less than desirable. He explained how to Escape Your Weight Fate.
Though genetics does determine a lot about physical appearance. Some studies have found that DNA may be responsible for up to 80% of body fat. Recent research identified six genes that seem to regulate the body’s fat storage locations.
Dr Oz: The Family Belly Weight Fate
Dr Oz said that understanding your body type can help you adjust your lifestyle to offset what may seem inevitable. If you carry your weight around the middle, you may have The Family Belly, according to Oz.

Dr Oz shared some tips to help families avoid their genetic weight fate, with reliance on supplements such as L-Arginine and DIM.
High Blood Pressure ran in a family Dr Oz spoke with. Belly fat storage is associated with high Cortisol levels (the stress hormone). This can stimulate fat storage. We may also be getting our behaviors from our parents or other family members, but we can break the cycle.
Dr Oz: L-Arginine Fat Burn & Cortisol Salad
Belly fat can get all over the body’s internal organs, including the heart. Dr Oz showed off a fatty heart, explaining that it can contribute to symptoms such as high Blood Pressure.
Dr Natalie Azar from NYU Langone Medical Center shared her three-prong solution for tackling Belly Fat. Leafy greens and citrus fruits (including bell peppers) can lower Cortisol, when eaten at each meal (try getting a cup per meal).
Also try 2,000 mg L-Arginine, an amino acid that boosts growth hormone to burn fat and increase lean muscle mass. Try it as a daily supplement with each meal.
Dr Oz: The Family Backside Weight Fate
Next, Dr Oz met a family who has a history of passing down big bottoms and thighs to future generations. Dr Azar said that historically, this seemed to be less of a health concern. But more recently, we have learned about its connection to Estrogen.
Too much Estrogen can make you more prone to Heart Disease as well as weight gain, and contribute to cancers like Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer.
Dr Oz: DIM Supplement for Big Bottom
To fight a big bum, try the supplement Diindolylmethane (DIM) to block some of the effects from Estrogen. This naturally occurs in Cruciferous vegetables, but you would need to eat a lot to get the same benefits. Take 150 mg DIM at breakfast.
Dr Oz: Chitosan Smoothie Recipe
Dr Azar also suggested a smoothie containing Chitosan (a fiber from the skeleton of some shellfish) and Whey Protein. You can enjoy this smoothie at breakfast and lunch. It also passed a family taste test on Dr Oz.
Ingredients
- Chitosan Capsule
- Whey Protein
- Water
- Ice
- Blueberries
- Flaxseed
- Cocoa
- Banana
Directions
- Combine ingredients in a blender and serve for breakfast and lunch.
Dr Oz: Family All Over Fat & 30s Metabolism
Dr Oz’s final family stored fat all over the body. They talked about how hard it can be to shape up once the weight starts sneaking up on you in your 30s.
“There are genetic variabilities in metabolic rates,” Dr Azar said. The Thyroid and other hormones could be responsible for metabolism issues. When hormones get out of sync, fat can travel all over the body.
Dr Oz: Sriracha Review & Strength Training
Dr Azar shared two solutions that may make a difference. The first was Sriracha Sauce, which contains Garlic and Capsaicin. Capsaicin can boost the metabolism with effects lasting 30 minutes after you eat. It’s great on almost anything. See if you can add a tablespoon of Sriracha at every meal.
Her other idea was Strength Training. Try moving with weights for 10 minutes, at least three times per week. It will improve cardiovascular fitness and build muscle for better calorie burning.
