Doctor Oz was joined by Dr. Andrew Weil to do an Alternative Health Clinic on the Dr Oz Show. Dr. Andrew Weil is an Alternative Medicine guru and is the author of books such as “8 Weeks to Optimum Health: A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Body’s Natural Healing Power” and “The Healthy Kitchen.”
Healthy Oils: Roasted Sesame Oil & Olive Oil
The first topic that Dr. Andrew Weil and Dr Oz discussed was how to Purge the Pantry. Dr. Weil said that roasted sesame oil is good for you and has been shown to cut cholesterol and blood pressure, but the regular sesame oil should be avoided. Of course, extra virgin olive oil is one of the healthier oils as well. But you should definitely through out corn oil and sunflower oil because these are poly-unsaturated oils which oxidize quickly and increase the risk of horrible things like cancer. What about coconut oil? Coconut oil is a solid at room temperature and Dr. Weil says that it is great for the skin, but is not yet convinced about eating it. Dr. Oz said that he uses coconut oil in his home though to replace butter and that a lot of people in Polynesia eat coconut oil.
Anti-Inflammatory Spices & Foods
Dr. Andrew Weil said that spices like garlic, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger root are very good for you. Weil said that many chronic diseases- like cancer, alzheimers disease and heart disease- all start as an inflammatory process. An anti-inflammatory diet is good for longevity and reduces the risk of many cancers (breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and more), rheumatoid arthritis and alzheimers disease. Turmeric is the most potent anti-inflammatory agent, and you can use 1 tsp of turmeric in bean dishes, stews or soups. If you cook with too much turmeric, then it can be bitter. Ginger, whether it be crystallized ginger, ginger tea or ginger powder, is a great anti-inflammatory. Cinnamon may be helpful for people with type 2 diabetes, but more studies are still necessary on this topic according to Andrew Weil.
