Dr Oz: B. Smith Alzheimer’s
B. Smith has been a model, restaurateur, TV host, as well as loving mother and wife. But now, her family is dealing with one of the hardest medical struggles to date: Smith’s Alzheimer’s disease. B. Smith and her husband joined Dr Oz to share an update on her health and to talk about the horrifying night that B. went missing for nearly 14 hours. Smith, who has Alzheimer’s, disappeared while traveling to New York City, in 2014. She was thankfully found unharmed at a Manhattan restaurant close to where she used to live.
Dr Oz: Living With Alzheimer’s
B. opened up and said when you’re used to doing so much, it feels like you’re not quite the person you used to be. To keep her mind stimulated, her husband Dan reads the paper with her every day and together they do word games, although it’s not always successful. B. admitted that she feels tearful, while her husband shared that they know they’re in a fight, which is why they’re going to fight back.
When she sat down with Dr Oz, she said she’s doing her best to be her best. B. Smith is actually 66-years-old but it’s hard to believe just by looking at her. She and Dan have been married for 25 years, and Dan admitted that he has his ups and downs. It’s not easy to be a caregiver.
Dr Oz: The Night B. Smith Went Missing
As for the night B. went missing, Dan explained that he put her on a bus to go from Long Island to Manhattan to be picked up by their daughter. They spent a day together until their daughter was going to put her on a bus so she could come back home. She actually put B. on the train at a different spot than where she got her off. B. got off at the wrong stop and walked through Manhattan all night long in the middle of a snow storm in a light jacket and high heels. She basically did a marathon and a half in high heels.
Their daughter experienced a lot of guilt over that one little thing that changed everything. B. teared up and agreed it was very scary. Dr Oz then shared the family rules that were created for her including that B. could no longer be alone and she always had to wear her I.D. bracelet. She also wasn’t allowed to drive anymore, which made her crazy, but her husband knew it was about doing what he needed to do.
Dr Oz: What You Need To Know About Alzheimer’s
Next, B. Smith and her husband wanted to share everything that you should know about Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Oz showed B. a brain scan of someone with Alzheimer’s, pointing out the build-up of plaque that forces people “out of alignment.” But the question is what causes that plaque, because there is no cure. There are ways to slow it down, however, which is why they eat a healthy diet and avoid sugar. They also exercise strenuously to get their heart rates up, and practice meditation. She takes her medicine and they try to stay positive.
Dan pointed out that African-Americans are 2-3 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, and women are more likely than men to develop it. He strongly believes that more people need to talk about it in order to create awareness and encourage change. They authored a book “Before I Forget.”
Dr Oz: Signs Of Alzheimer’s Disease
Finally, Dr Oz wanted to teach his viewers the signs of Alzheimer’s so they know what to look for. There are four key signs, first of which was having trouble performing simple tasks. Next, if you’re constantly getting lost or disoriented in a familiar place. Third, are you talking in circles or repeating conversations? Finally, if you have trouble making choices or have bad judgement.
