Dr Oz: J.R. Martinez Biggest Fan
Dr Oz and J.R. Martinez continued their conversation about J.R.’s Iraq War injuries, miraculous recovery, and daughter Lauryn Anabelle. Next, he got to meet one of his biggest fans, who said she taught him the difference between being a burn victim vs burn survivor.
Doctor Oz wanted J.R. to meet one of his biggest fans, a woman named Bethany. She wrote a letter about why he is her hero. She was also burned at age three in an accident while playing outside her home.
Since then, she has had more than 50 skin grafts and surgeries, struggling with feelings of depression about her appearance. That all started to change when she saw J.R. Martinez on Dancing With The Stars and learned more about his story of survival and triumph.
Dr Oz: J.R. Martinez Burn Victim Vs Burn Survivor
Bethany said that she is now 16, and hearing J.R.’s message has helped her change the way she thinks of herself, no longer as a burn victim but instead a burn survivor.
Bethany got her wish to meet J.R. Martinez on Dr Oz’s show. They shared a hug and some big smiles. She said she connects with his story because she identifies with it. She appreciated his example of not worrying about what others think about his appearance.
Dr Oz: Burn Victims Self Confidence
Now she wants to pay it forward and work with pediatric burn victims in her career. J.R. said he is honored to have inspired Bethany. She said that J.R. is a great dancer, and his confidence in front of audiences really made an impression on her.
J.R. and Bethany got the chance to take a spin around the Dr Oz stage as the audience cheered. What a fun twist to this story! I would be interested to know how things work out for Bethany as she pursues her education. Maybe J.R. will keep up with her and mention her in a future book.
