Dr Oz: Toxic Relationships & Love Ingredients
Dr Oz talked with people stuck in relationships that were a source of toxic sabotage. His guest, Dr Brenda Walsh, had some advice to help others who might find themselves in similar situations. What are the ingredients of love? How can you keep your relationships moving forward?
Dr Oz: Knowing How To Love

Dr Brenda Walsh counseled three pairs of friends and family members about how to move on from the toxic battles in their relationships and set boundaries.
Doctor Oz wondered why people who love each other can hurt each other so much. “Knowing how to love…requires learning, it requires growth,” Wade said, which was something all of them needed.
While the simplest solution may be to walk away, Dr Walsh said that it’s worth fighting for and learning how to love a friend, parent, child, or spouse. “Love isn’t something that carries itself,” she said.
Dr Oz: Ingredients Of Love
She added that the ingredients of love include “wisdom, understanding, compassion, maybe forgiveness.” Those elements can help you achieve “real love.”
Why can’t those who are being sabotaged take responsibility? Dr Walsh said that each of the women she met on the show today has the power to do that for themselves as well. Learning to reinforce your boundaries can be beneficial.
Dr Oz: Setting Boundaries In Relationships
Starting with Jennifer and Valerie, Dr Walsh encouraged her to change her approach to food and set boundaries with her mother about saying hurtful things.
For Susan and Bill, her life could be on the line. He has the chance to start cooking better, but she can’t keep eating his hearty cooking at the expense of her health.
Dr Oz: Best Friends Blaming Each Other
Then there were Toni and Tynetta, and Dr Walsh said they are pushing back and forth with one another, blaming each other. She suggested bringing in healthier snacks, such as fresh fruit.
Dr Walsh also wanted the ladies to get to the root of the anger between them so they can address some of their lingering issues from the past.
Dr Oz: Relationships Moving Forward
Which of these three relationships did you identify with the most? Whether you are struggling in a relationship with your parents or children, butting heads with a love interest, or getting into it with a friend, Dr Walsh’s message was that there is always an opportunity to move forward. But usually at least one of you will have to be the bigger person and make the first step toward change.
