Dr Oz did a segment on Dandruff and ways to get rid of the embarrassing dandruff flakes. Doctor Oz gave a great Dandruff Home Remedy using Tea Tree Oil, as well as shampoo with zinc and tar. Plus, he spoke about how to tell the difference between the different types of dandruff including regular dandruff, Seborrheic Dermatitis and Scalp Psoriasis.
Dr Oz: What Causes Dandruff?
Dr Oz said that in your scalp you have follicles of hair and patches of skin, and as cells get pulled up from your scalp, fungi begins to grow and eats up the oil from your scalp. The result is that your scalp gets dry and you produce scalp flakes. But there are other things that cause problems that look like dandruff. Here is what Dr Oz said are the differences:
Dr Oz: Different Dandruff Types
Dr Oz: Regular Dandruff
Dr Oz said that regular dandruff is just small white flakes, and you will not see redness on your scalp. Regular dandruff is just the shedding of cells.
Dr Oz: Seborrheic Dermatitis Dandruff
Dr Oz said that if you have large, greasy, yellow flakes plus redness in your scalp, then you probably have Seborrheic Dermatitis.
Dr Oz: Scalp Psoriasis Dandruff
Dr Oz said that the most worrisome dandruff is Psoriasis of the scalp which is where you get dark gray flakes that are very dry. When you have psoriasis, you will also notice bright red patches in your scalp amongst the white patches. Psoriasis is an autoimmune problem that is absolutely horrible to have to deal with. I wish there was a better cure for Psoriasis!
Dr Oz: Dandruff Shampoo: Zinc Shampoo vs Tar Shampoo
Dr Oz said that you can get over-the-counter shampoos including Zinc Shampoo and Tar Shampoo, but he said that both work in ways that we do not fully understand. Zinc Shampoo kills the fungus, while Tar Shampoo limits the turnover of cells in your scalp. Dr Oz said that you really have to try both to figure out what is best for you.
Dr Oz: Dandruff Remedy – Tea Tree Oil
Dr Oz said that his favorite Dandruff Remedy is to use Tea Tree Oil, which has both anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. You can even find shampoos with tea tree oil in them now. Or you can make your own by adding some tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo. Another great use for tea tree oil is to fight acne – so if you buy a bottle, it has many purposes!
Dr Oz also said that if you have dandruff then you are probably deficient in Vitamin B and Zinc, which are important to make new cells in your body. Lentils are a great source of these nutrients and Wheat Germ is full of Zinc. Dr Oz suggested sprinkling wheat germ on your popcorn instead of butter – yum!
