Dr Oz: Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson At The CMA’s
Dr Oz sent a special member of Nurse Nation to country music’s biggest night at the CMA’s. Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson was on the red carpet with Dr Oz’s medical team, and she was ecstatic to find out what health questions country music stars and their fans had to ask Dr Oz.
Chris Janson was guilty of drinking a lot of soda, chugging up to 15 a day. Kellie Pickler wanted to know the best remedy for jet lag and the best hangover remedy as well. Old Dominion wanted to know how much alcohol was really too much, while Scotty McCreery asked about a good meal for someone who has little time but wants to eat healthy. Cassadee Pope was curious about cutting out gluten and Lee Ann Womack asked how she could make herself taller. Jason Pritchett was curious about alkaline water and Chase Bryant wanted a remedy for a sore throat, as did Jewel.

After several country music stars at the CMA’s asked Dr Oz about the best remedy for a hanover, he knew he had to share his best tricks. (64141731@N00 / Flickr)
Dr Oz: Hoarseness & Sore Throat Remedy
Kelley Johnson then joined Dr Oz on his show and shared that she was probably most excited to see Kellie Pickler, because she has a song of her’s on repeat in her car. Dr Oz first wanted to tackle Jewel’s question about hoarseness and a sore throat. Dr Oz’s solution was a licorice root gargle. It’s a liquid that you add to water and it tastes like black licorice, but it isn’t sweet. When you gargle with it, the irritation washes away.
If you don’t have licorice root, try a cold water gargle!
Dr Oz: Apple Cider Vinegar For Headaches
Next, Brett Elderedge asked about tension headaches, looking for a solution to find relief. Dr Oz suggested apple cider vinegar. He likes to use it by adding about 1/4 of a cup to 1/2 C warm water right off the stove. Then place a towel over your head and inhale the water for 5-10 minutes.
If you don’t have time for that, take up to 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar, two times a day.
Dr Oz: Lemon Essential Oil For Stress Relief
Rascal Flatts asked how he could relieve stress while on the road, and Dr Oz suggested lemon essential oil. Kelley explained that the essential oil is concentrated in the rind, which means it’s stronger than an actual lemon. Put a couple drops of the oil in your hands, and then rub your hands together to warm it up a little bit before taking deep breaths, inhaling it in.
Dr Oz: What To Eat To Avoid A Hangover
A lot of the country music stars wanted to know how to beat a hangover. Dr Oz said the key is to prepare, plan, and pace yourself, so remember the three P’s. The best way to prepare is to “carb up.” Alcohol destroys essential nutrients which is why it’s important to fill yourself up with healthy starches, vitamins, and minerals. Try grilled chicken and mashed sweet potatoes and avoid greasy foods.
Dr Oz: Avoid Carbonation & Try A Virgin Bloody Mary
You also want to avoid carbonated beverages, as those increase the rate of alcohol absorption in the blood. It’s called gastric emptying, and it’s when the carbonation in your stomach pushes the alcohol out and into the small intestine sooner than it normally would empty. That results in a more intense hangover.
Finally, if you’re already hit with a hangover, try a virgin bloody mary. Use tomato juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, celery, horseradish, shallot, celery salt, lime juice, and kosher salt. It works because tomato juice helps with nausea, while all of it together re-hydrates you. Don’t add alcohol, as it only delays the pain.
