The Doctors: Beauty Products That Don’t Mix
The Doctors team is looking out for everyone when it comes to beauty products, and they revealed the dos and don’ts of skin care with some help from beauty expert and skin coach Celeste Hilling.
The Drs TV: Sunscreen Vs Retinol
Have you ever combined a sunscreen product with a retinol product? According to Celeste Hilling, this creates multiple problems. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, and it is commonly found in acne products and anti-aging treatments, but it does not work when it’s exposed to sunlight.
When this process occurs with Retinol, it can also break down the SPF in the sunscreen you are wearing. That could mean you put on both layers for nothing! Instead, try using Retinol only at night and applying sunscreen by itself in the morning or during the day.
The Doctors: Vitamin C Vs Alpha Hydroxy Acid
Alpha Hydroxy Acids do not mix with Vitamin C. Both of these components have high acidity, and it could be too much for your body or skin to handle. You might wind up with irritation, dryness, or red marks on your skin. Celeste’s advice was to use Vitamin C during the day and Alpha Hydroxy Acid at night.
When you apply a Vitamin C product under a layer of sunscreen, you will help to increase the body’s UVA absorption.
The Drs TV: Benzoyl Peroxide Vs Retinol
The last combination to avoid is Benzoyl Peroxide with Retinol. Benzoyl Peroxide can dry out the skin, and it is best to use in the morning. If you find that your Benzoyl Peroxide product dries you out, try a natural alternative such as Witch Hazel. Save your Retinol products for the nighttime.
Anytime you are trying out a new beauty regimen, give your body about a month to adjust to the process so that you can start to evaluate the results.
