The Doctors: Fat Fights Diabetes?
The Doctors medical team discussed a Swedish study that concluded the fats found in some dairy products could fight Type 2 Diabetes. According to the research, those who had eight portions of high-fat dairy each day reduced their Type 2 Diabetes risk by 20% or more.
Dr Jennifer Ashton said that this is a sign of the “pendulum swinging in the other direction” after years of diets and campaigns targeting fat as the bad guy when it comes to eating habits. However, she elaborated that there is no perfect plan that will work for everyone. For example, high-fat dairy is not a great choice for many people who are Lactose Intolerant.

Dr Travis Stork also had some thoughts on the study. He pointed out that it focused on the extremes of consuming these Saturated Fats, because one group ate very little dairy while the other ate a large amount.
Why didn’t the people who consumed a low amount of dairy have the same results in terms of a lower risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Dr Stork suggested that it could be explained by the fact that when fat is removed from dairy products, it tends to be replaced with something else, such as carbohydrates or sugar.
The Doctors: Does Fat Make You Fat?
Dr Stork also said that Fat in foods is not necessarily what makes people fat. Dr Ashton explained that the brain and digestive system communicate regarding the ideal amount of Saturated Fat in the body. If you are eating nonfat or low-fat foods, your body will never tell your brain that you are full on Saturated Fat, so you could wind up eating a lot more than you intended.
Instead, The Doctors panel seemed to agree that you should choose full-fat dairy products and just use moderation when it comes to your portion size.
