Dr. Oz: Why Should We Take Supplements?
Dr. Oz talked to Walmart pharmacist Zach Frye on his show about the importance of supplements to a heart healthy lifestyle. Zach Frye is basically a normal person, so I can’t blame him for this too much, but he seemed incredibly nervous. He was so nervous it was distracting.

But he did say supplements can help maintain cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood pressure levels that are already in the normal range. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. They’re not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. But they can be helpful to health.
Dr. Oz: What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is an antioxidant made in the body and it’s found in many foods. It’s also available as a supplement. It helps with energy production in the body and particularly in the heart. Zach Frye recommends Spring Valley CoQ10.
Dr. Oz said the CoQ10 can lower blood pressure. When you have high blood pressure, your blood vessels are squeezing too much. CoQ10 can help open up the blood vessels and let the blood go through more easily.
Dr. Oz explained to get the amount you need, you’d have to eat eight pounds of beef, 10 pounds of peanuts, and 300 oranges. In other words, it’s easier to take it as a supplement. Zach Frye recommends taking 100 milligrams once or twice a day.
Once or twice? That doesn’t seem very committal. The visibly nervous Zach Frye seemed pretty confident about this measurement, even though if we wanted this amount through food, it would apparently mean 10 or 20 pounds of peanuts. There’s kind of a huge difference there.
Dr. Oz: Fish Oil
Fish Oil is a supplement we often hear about. Fish Oil is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help maintain our triglyceride levels. Spring Valley Fish Oil is naturally sourced from fish and it’s purified to remove any mercury. You want about 1,000 milligrams of fish oil a day.
Dr. Oz: Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps build strong bones and improves the heart. Many studies show that low levels of vitamin D impact the heart. Vitamin D is therefore a good part of a heart healthy plan. Take about 1,000 IUs.
Dr. Oz gave his audience all three bottles of Spring Valley Vitamin D, CoQ10, and Fish Oil.
