Dr Sanjay Gupta: “My Mom is My Idol”
For the first time ever Dr. Oz is sitting down with Dr. Sanjay Gupta! Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN, but today he is on Dr. Oz’s stage for a conversation that includes the moment in his career that changed him and the person who he most admires.
Dr Oz: Dr Sanjay Gupta Used Drill Bit to Perform Brain Surgery in Iraq
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a world renowned brain surgeon, but he is also a journalist. While covering the war in Iraq he recalls an incident that changed his life. A young soldier was shot in the back of the head and was in critical condition. Dr. Gupta was asked to step out of his role as a journalist and help with this young man’s medical emergency. The only problem was that they were not prepared for that type of injury.

Dr Sanjay Gupta says that his Mom is his idol because she was not only an immigrant, but also the first female engineer to work at Ford Motor Company.
Dr. Gupta explained how he literally used the bit from a Black and Decker Drill to perform surgery on this soldier’s brain in an attempt to save his life. He then remembers putting him on a helicopter, hoping that he would be okay. It was not until 2 months later that Dr. Gupta says he received a phone call with an update about the patient he had treated in the desert of Iraq. Although he had a bit of weakness in his left hand, he was otherwise doing just fine, something that Dr. Gupta says was simply remarkable after all he had been through.
Dr Oz: Dr Sanjay Gupta Monday Mornings
Dr. Oz says that while Dr. Sanjay Gupta has written books on a professional level, his most recent book was one that quite different in that it was fiction, but also the content was very different. In the book, Monday Mornings, Dr. Gupta writes about the times when doctors in hospitals make mistakes in and it is talked about behind closed doors.
He says mistakes happen a lot, but people just do not realize it, so he wanted to write a book that would show how these mistakes are handled and how doctors can learn from their mistakes, but without mentioning specific names of his colleagues. Dr. Gupta believes that the most important thing is that doctors learn from their mistakes because if you do not learn from your mistakes it would be insanity.
