Dr. Oz: Dean McDermott Cheating, Suicidal Thoughts & Quitting Drinking

Dr. Oz: Dean McDermott & Tori Spelling Marital Problems

Dr. Oz wanted to sit down with Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling to discuss their marital issues and Dean’s cheating and substance abuse. The two requested to be interviewed separately on the show and Dean went first. Their marital problems and Dean’s drug and alcohol abuse and cheating have been pretty thoroughly shown to the world through their reality show True Tori. Now, for the first time ever, both appeared on Dr. Oz separately.

Dr. Oz asked Dean McDermott how his relationship with his wife was now in the wake of the infidelity and substance abuse. He said now, their relationship is stronger than ever, because it forced them to look at their relationship and deal with the things that weren’t working.

“This affair really sat me down and I had to look at myself and look at my health, my mental health issues, my alcoholism, my drug use, you know, and really step up and be accountable for all of those things and get the help that I needed,” he said.

Dr. Oz: Is Dean McDermott Still Drinking?

Dean McDermott said he’s been sober for 11 months and 7 days. Dr. Oz said he loves it when alcoholics know the exact amount of days it’s been since they last drank. Dean said sobriety means a lot to him.

Dr. Oz: Did Dean McDermott Try to Commit Suicide?

Dean McDermott was recently hospitalized because he was thinking about ending his life. He said he was suicidal because the story was about to break that he’d had the affair.

“Something so personal and so damaging and hurtful and shameful was about to be unleashed and become very public, on top of how I was feeling about myself. Incredible low self-esteem, not worthy of the relationship I had. And now this. There’s no way that I could ever repair the damage that I just inflicted on the person I love the most. So for me, where my head was at, was the best way to deal with this is to take myself out of the equation. I thought it would make everything a lot easier if I just wasn’t here,” he said.

Dean said that he’s still struggling with dark thoughts when things get bad. He said there’s still times when he thinks it would be easier if he wasn’t around anymore. But he’s talking to his therapist and working in a 12-step program, trying to improve himself.

Dr. Oz: Dean McDermott Health Issues

Dean McDermott said that he’s been trying to get more healthy in the wake of all of this. He’s sleeping well and being more active. He’s lost 20 pounds since he left rehab.

But is being a reality star good for Dean McDermott and Tori Spelling’s marriage? That’s something he talked about later in the show.
