Dr. Oz: Tim Shriver Activism for People with Special Needs
Dr. Oz talked to Tim Shriver, who is an activist for people with special needs. He was born to a legacy of leaders. His father was Sargent Shriver and his mother was Eunice Kennedy. He spent 15 years in public education and then took on his current role, chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics. Under his leadership, the Special Olympics has evolved into a worldwide movement of inclusion and respect.
Dr. Oz: Getting Rid of the R-Word

Now, he’s campaigning to stop the use of what he calls “the R-word,” often used a schoolyard taunt. The word is “retard.” Tim Shriver said that the word has been used as derogatory and it connotes someone who is undesirable and stupid. He said it’s a form of “verbal violence” and bullying. The word started to use in medical diagnosis, but it’s become something else to tear people down. He wants people to stop using this word to give some of the most vulnerable people in our society dignity.
Dr. Oz: Tim Shriver Fully Alive Review
Tim Shriver said children with special needs are just as lovable and special as any other child. Tim Shriver’s book Fully Alive is his attempt to channel the stories of parents who care for these children and to show what matters most.
Dr. Oz surprised Tim Shriver with a video message from Special Olympics athletes throughout the world. The athletes thanked him for what he’s done for special athletes. Several of the athletes thanked him in their own languages.
Tim Shriver said that this video really showed why he wanted to write this book. They’re a beautiful community.

The book also touches on Tim Shriver’s family. Tim said he thought his own family has had a lot of secrets throughout the years and he wanted to get away from that.
Dr. Oz: Maria Shriver Message to Tim Shriver
Dr. Oz asked Maria Shriver to make a video for him, who is his sister. She did the video with dirty hair and no makeup because Dr. Oz needed the video immediately. She said this made her feel fully alive. She also said she felt fully alive when she’s in Tim’s presence and she’s telling everyone to buy this book.
