Dr Oz: Secret Dangers Of Antibiotics

Doctor Oz spoke about Antibiotic Dangers.  Did you know that you could get the symptoms of having food poisoning, but it could be caused by Antibiotics and not from something bad that you ate?  Dr Oz said this is called C Difficile Colitis and there are some important tips you must follow when you take antibiotics to avoid this life-threatening complication.  Dr Oz’s Assistant-Of-The Day was Traci from seat 92, and I would like to join in on Doctor Oz’s message to Traci’s boyfriend Dwayne – she is awesome, marry her!!! Ok now back to the topic of why antibiotics can be dangerous…

Dr Oz: C Difficile Colitis

Doctor Oz said that C Difficile Colitis is a bacterial infection that gives you symptoms similar to food poisoning.  This is Dr Oz Probioticsyet another reason why you should not take antibiotics unless you really need it.  Dr Oz said that all too often people take antibiotics for things like a sore throat when it is not needed, but if it is not needed then why do their doctors prescribe it in the first place?  Surely some of the blame has to fall on doctors for over-prescribing antibiotics!

Dr Oz: Antibiotics & Probiotics

Dr Oz said that normally when you eat food, it goes into your stomach and gets digested by bacteria that creates gas.  But when you take antibiotics, it kills most of the bacteria in your bowel, so now when you eat food, there are no bacteria to digest it.  So in essence, the antibiotics often kill off the good bacteria but leave the bad bacteria (C Diff) living in your colon and bowel.  Dr Oz said that you can die from this problem, or at least get bad diarrhea.

Dr Oz: Probiotic Bread

Dr Oz gave a few tips for how to avoid C Difficile Colitis:

1.  Never take antibiotics if you don’t have to.

2.  Take probiotics like kefir (fermented milk) or greek yogurt.  Or you can make your own yogurt at home which I absolutely love to do.  Click here to read a post about how to make your own yogurt: Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker Review.

3.  Tempeh is another source of probiotics that appeals to many people.

4. Probiotic Bread is a brand new product that costs around $3.99 and sounds like a very tasty option.  I am going to do some tests on different Probiotic Bread Recipes to find an excellent one, so if you are interested in my final recipe please let me know and I’ll share it (just leave a comment below!).

5. If none of these probiotic options appeal to you, you can also take Probiotic Supplements.  I recently started taking these everyday, and I am already seeing improvements in my digestion.  If you are interested in the Probiotic Supplements that I’ve tried so far, just let me know and I’ll post the info!

Comments to Dr Oz: Antibiotic Dangers: C Difficile Colitis & Probiotic Bread

  1. Where can I buy the Probiotic Bread? Does it come in a sour dough variety?

  2. Wow, it looks like it is going to be much harder than Dr Oz made it seem to find Probiotic Bread! The only company I have found so far that seems to make a Probiotic Bread is a company called the Orlando Baking Company, but their product only seems to be available at stores in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and select stores on the East Coast. Their line of Probiotic Breads are called Orlando True Grain Bread. Not sure if it is available in sour dough though…

  10. Donna Wagner says:

Where can I get Probiotic bread in Milwaukee, WI?

  11. Would love to know where to get probiotic bread!

  12. Hi Dr OZ, I would like to know what the name of the probiotic bread, and if it’s sold here in australia, and recipes and any other suggestions for good healthy digestive system.
I love your show, when I am able to watch it.
    Many thanks.

  13. Brenda Davis says:

Dr. Oz is presented as such a smart, forward thinking member of the medical community. If he truly has our best interest at heart, he will stop promoting obscure, hard to find products and let people know that they can do a much better job at introducing probiotics to their systems with a supplement designed to DO SO!! There are many trusted brand names out there in health food stores doing a phenomenol job.

  14. Ellen Finch says:

I would like to know which probiotics you have taken. I have RA and have decided this would be a smart move. So I started on them. I also take Milk Thistle and other herbs. The milk thistle was because I had off readings on my liver enzymes for about a year;. I don’t drink or have hepatitis. It got as high as 78. My doctor said maybe I should have a liver biopsy and I asked if first I could do something herbal and he suggested milk thistle, within 30 days I was fine, so I continue to take it.

I love your show and watch when I can, but find it confusing because there are so many supplements for things that I have. I don’t want to overdue.

I think you should write a book based on your show. Put items into chapters, such as heart disease, arthritis, etc. This will help narrow things down. It is sometimes overwhelming.

    Sincerely, Ellen Finch

  15. Please share your favorite Probiotic Bread recipe. By the way, I keep your website open whenever I watch the Dr. Oz show! Thanks for all the info :)

I was reading up on PB , and it wasnt recommend as a food product, Sourdough and greek yogurt are supposed to be the same, if not better for you. I do luv Dr Oz,tho. Any updates will be great.

  28. Sourdough Bread and Greek yogurt do not work for people who have had c diff…..or currently have…I have found that KEFIR works the best….after having it 4 times my system has never been the same,, and I am scared to death to take antibiotics. They are currently working on a vaccine to help, as well as a better drug that actually kills the c diff spore.

  29. I have just completed one course of Flagyl, then three courses of Vancomycin, treating post-Clindamycin C. difficile infection and am at my wit’s end. I would like to have the bread recipe. Also, neither my general practitioner nor the gastroenterologist have advised me as to what I may eat, beyond the BRAT diet. Where can I find dietary advice? Thank you.

  30. I have type 2 Diabetes and have been having a lot of digestive problems. I have been taking a probiotic in powder form that I mix with water. How do I know which probiotics actually work? Would like to know what ones you would suggest using?

  31. Pam Peacock says:

Would like info on probiotic supplements. Saw segment on today’s show (Jan. 30) and am interested in adding Probiotic powder supplement to my diet (I think I understood that correctly). Don’t know what kind or how to purchase. How much to add? Deal with Fibromyalgia/CFS. Recent labs show low Vit D levels and now taking Vit d and Vit D3 supplements. Also, just want to improve daily diet as have digestive issues (IBS).

  32. I’ve been taking probiotics instead of Asacol for two years. Its been a blessing for me.The one I take is Digestive Advantage for IBS.

  33. Please send me the recipe for the best probiotic bread recipe.

  34. Please let me know the probiotic you have tried as soon as possible. I had knee revision surgery on December 9, 2010 and contracted a very bad case of C Diff. I am scheduled for another surgery at the same hospital on March 22, 2012 and would like, at all cost to avoid C Diff. Please help!!!!

  35. Peggy Barker says:

I’m interested in learning about the probiotic bread, where to buy it and what probiotics are the best to take, that are proven to get through stomach acid. Is Kefir the best?

  36. I just had a colon resection for diverticulitis, i developed c-diff. I am now on an antibiotic for that. I want to take a good probiotic, per my infectious disease doctor. What would be a very good one. I would appreciate your help. Thank you

  37. I just had a colon resection for diverticulitis, i developed c-diff. I am now on an antibiotic for that. I want to take a good probiotic, per my infectious disease doctor. What would be a very good one. I would appreciate your help. Thank you
Please disregard I thought this was Dr. Oz on the Dr. OZ show

  38. Having C Diff myself and after 30 days of Flaygl and it’s still not gone I am desperate myself for some help. Been reading everything I could and found that the only Probiotic that really gets to the infection is called Saccharomyces Boulardii and I have only found it in a few products including this one on Amazon ~ Jarrow Formulas Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013OVW0E/ref=pe_385040_30332190_pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1?tag=wellbuzz-20 The reviews gave me hope so I have sent for some.
The probiotic bread sounds like a good idea if we can find it. Nancy’s has a sour cream with probiotics and it taste pretty good. I can hardly stand to eat yogurt anymore after so often this past year so am happy to find the probiotic in anything else. Here is to good health on the way for all of us!

  39. Patty Gilmore says:

I am on my third round of C Diff since April 1,2014. I am currently taking Vancomyacin and I am on a 10 week pulse therapy plan. I will add in Dificid for the last ten days. I also take VSL3, three times daily.Due to all of the super antibiotics, I have lost weight and body mass and my hair is falling out and very thin. I am taking 1000 mg Vitamin D3 daily. I am looking for a super nutritious protein shake that I can make without the use of store bought powders. Any suggestions?
