Dr Oz: Electro Convulsive Therapy ECT vs Electroshock Therapy

Dr Oz: ECT Electro Convulsive Therapy for Depression

You’ve only seen it in horror movies, but today, Dr Oz took you behind closed doors to give you a preview of how Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) worked. Today, more than 100,000 people in the US have had this approved medical procedure done to help cure depression. But does it work?

Dr Oz: Electroshock Therapy

Electroshock Therapy was introduced in 1913 and used a higher voltage. During the electroshock therapy, patients were not given any anesthesia so they were alert through the procedure.

I have Major Depression, Anxieties, OCD, and used the ECT Therapy once a week for 2 years. I finished the treatments in May 2011, and have been able to function at a normal pace. The only side effect that I got with the ECT is memory loss, and they are long term. I don’t remember much of my past up until maybe one year ago, which I find difficult at times. I think of the benefits this treatment has given me, and I might not have my memory, but have my life back. I had to retire medically at 48 years old, 2 years ago, that’s when I started my treatments, as there was no other alternatives, tried many antidepressants and nothing was working. I am now on Paxil and Concerta for my memory, and also some sleeping pills to help me at night. I live in New Brunswick, Canada, and the ECT Therapy is used in our hospitals. Just wanted to share my story about this terrible illness, and the cure that we have with ECT.

ECT has ABSOLUTELY given me my Life back and I would highly recommend this very humane treatment to anyone who cannot tolerate anti-depressants (me and 50% of all people, according to my wonderful Dr.). Anti-depressants are dolled out like candy these days and, speaking for myself, they made my genetic MDD (Major Depressive Disorder) much worse. Thanks to ECT (I had my 29th treatment last week), I’m able to enjoy Life, I’m happier than I’ve ever been, I’m able to work again and I’m incredibly GRATEFUL to be Vertical. Life is a gift and ECT has allowed me to enjoy it to the fullest — once again.

    ECT Fan in SoCal,
    Nancy Holstad
