Dr. Oz: The Real Woman’s Guide to Mood Swings
Dr. Oz talked about “The Real Woman’s Guide to Mood Swings” with the help of Dr. Julie Holland, who wrote a book about mood swings. She said women are naturally moody and that’s not a bad thing. She said emotions help us contact with our children, our spouse, and our family.

Dr. Holland said that many people think there’s something wrong with their moodiness. There’s a growing percentage of women in America who are taking anti-depressants.
Dr. Oz: How to Not Cry
Dr. Oz viewer Carla sent in a video about how she feels the need to cry when she feels a mood coming on. She doesn’t want to cry in front of her kids or her clients. Carla said she tries to think of something happy to combat it when she feels sad.
Dr. Holland said crying is a good thing. Crying helps us feel better because it lets us feel deeply. She said women apologize for crying a lot. It’s often the first thing women say when they start crying. If you’re in a situation where you can’t cry, you need to switch your brain over to your rational side. Try to count by 7 or do other math problems. Dr. Holland likes to think about rhyming words.
Just repeat in your head: “Time, climb, mime, lime, grime, and rhyme.”
Dr. Oz: How to Manage Anger
Another woman said she often gets mad and her blood pressure rises and she loses patience with people. Afterward, she feels sad. She often lashes out at her kids and her fiance.
Dr. Holland said that women often accommodate and bend to other people’s wishes. She said sometimes women need to say no, because otherwise they’ll feel resentful. Dr. Holland said it’s important to explain how you feel and not say yes when you don’t want to.
Dr. Oz said that it’s important not to tell yourself or tell other people to “calm down”. He said anger calls for empathy, not calmness. Understanding why the other person did what they did can help you stop being angry.
Dr. Oz: Is Overeating Always Bad?
Sherri often overeats to alleviate her mood and relieve stress. Dr. Holland said it’s important to be smart about food and drinks. We naturally soothe ourselves with these things, but it’s important to think about why you’re eating or drinking them. Carbs do calm you down because they increase serotonin levels, so there is a real health benefit to overeating. Dr. Holland said if you want carbs, eat complex ones, not simple ones.
Instead of reaching for comfort foods, eat turkey, eggs, fish, or chocolate, which all have mood-improving properties. If you reach for chocolate, get the high cacao chocolate, because it’s a little better for you.
