1. Simple Sugars
2. Syrups
3. Enriched Bleached Flours
4. Trans Fats
5. Saturated Fats

For example, when you are reading the list of ingredients at the grocery store, you should avoid things like: sugar dextrose, corn syrup, bleached flour, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (which is a trans fat).

What does Dr. Oz say about natural syrup, i.e., maple syrup, in moderation?

In moderation, maple syrup is a good alternative for other sweeteners like white sugar. Dr. Oz gave a recipe for Amy’s Amyazing Chocolate Chip Cookies made out of the following ingredients:

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
2 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup agave (could use honey or pure maple syrup)
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil (could use applesauce to substitute!)
    1/2 cup almond butter
    1 tbsp. vanilla extract
    1/2 tsp Kosher salt
    1/2 tsp baking soda
1 cup of dark chocolate bar broken into chunks
    1 banana

So in addition to maple syrup being a good alternative to other sweeteners, you may consider agave or honey too!
