Dr. Oz: Diabetic Shock
Dr. Oz went on a ride along with a group of dedicated paramedics to see what their day was like. He went with them on a call where a diabetic teenager had become unconscious. The paramedics and Dr. Oz all tried to help him as he laid on the floor. The teen, named Angel, said he had felt dehydrated since he first woke up and was so weak he could barely speak.

The paramedics gave Angel an IV, covered him with a blanket, and rushed him to the hospital. Angel told them he had asthma and allergies, in addition to the diabetes. His mother accompanied them in the ambulance.
Dr. Oz: Losing Insulin When Leaving An Abusive Situation
Dr. Oz talked to her at the ER, where she explained that the day before, they’d left a domestic violence situation. Angel had dropped his insulin while they were leaving. She said her mother and father died of diabetes. She also revealed she had lung cancer and she hasn’t been back to the doctors in a while because she’s taking care of two sick kids. Angel had also made the decision not to go to the doctor until after going to work, because he wanted to help provide for his family.
Dr. Oz told Angel he was going to take care of him so he could take care of his mom when he got better.
After showing the clip, Dr. Oz revealed Angel is now on his way to recovery.
Dr. Oz: Life of a Paramedic
Dr. Oz welcomed to his studio two of the paramedics he went to scenes with, David Fowler and Joseph Subrizi. David Fowler said paramedics have a variety of medical emergencies that they see. They play a number of roles as a result, from diplomat to nurse to psychologist to medical detective to doctor. He said it can be challenging to juggle all the different jobs they have to do in the midst of these emergencies.
Joseph Subrizi said he learns something new every day. He’s been an EMS for eight years and he still feels like he has a lot more to learn. The hardest thing to do, he said, was when they go into someone’s home and see that person and know it’s the worst day of their life. No one wakes up expecting to need an ambulance and to go to the hospital.
The paramedics had a gift for Dr. Oz. It was a paramedic jacket with Dr. Oz’s name on it. He tried it on and he seemed very pleased with the gift.
