Dr. Oz: Forgive Yourself for Health Mistakes You’ve Made
Dr. Oz has been talking to Christine, who wishes she could have a health do-over. Luckily for her, Dr. Oz introduced her to Dr. Michael Roizen, who had a great plan for her to try to reverse her high blood pressure and diabetes and help her lose the 50 pounds her doctor says will save her life.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen agreed the first step to a health do-over is to forgive yourself for mistakes you’ve already made.

Dr. Roizen said the first step on a health do-over is to detox the mind. The real problem with restarting your health is that you have habits you’ve already built up. They’re ingrained in your mind.
For Christine, who loves rice and refried beans, when she pictures lunch, she thinks about those foods. In order to restart her health, she has to learn to picture other things when she thinks about lunch. Instead of refried beans, she should have black beans. Make small changes to turn your life toward health.
Dr. Oz: Food Felons
Dr. Roizen said there are five “food felons” that Christine needs to stop eating:
- Simple sugar
- Syrups
- Saturated fat
- Simple carbs
- Trans fat
These foods prevent the insulin receptors from getting rid of glucose in the blood and add to inflammation in the body.
Dr. Oz: Stop Counting Calories
Dr. Oz said that Christine needs to stop counting calories and needs to instead count quality. This means she should have ingredients that will help decrease her blood pressure and get rid of her diabetes.
Dr. Oz: Foods to Beat Heart Disease
Dr. Roizen recommended fiber, which can be found in fruits and vegetables. Dr. Roizen likes to have half his plate be fruits and vegetables. Since Christine likes sugar, Dr. Roizen recommended she season them with cinnamon, so she can trick her brain into thinking it’s sugar.
He also recommended lean proteins like skinless turkey, skinless chicken, fish, and nuts. She should also eat whole grains. Unsaturated fats like fish, olive oil, and nuts, will also help her have clean arteries.
Diabetes and high blood pressure make it much easier for people to have heart disease. They add wear and tear to the arteries. These foods will help her arteries stay young.
Dr. Oz: Redefining What Cheating Means
Dr. Michael Roizen said there’s a lot of diets out there that say you can have a cheat meal or a cheat day. This is dangerous, because it makes your brain go haywire. Whatever you have on that day, you start craving the next day. Instead, Dr. Roizen said that if we cheat, we want to just have smaller portions. Have just two ounces of dark chocolate or one glass of wine, rather than a whole chocolate bar or a whole bottle of wine.
Dr. Roizen’s book This is Your Do-Over is out now.
