Dr Oz: Should You Try Coconut Milk Ice Cream?
Are the new low-calorie ice creams on the market really worth it? There’s on kind of ice cream that consumers are arguing is even better than the real thing: coconut milk ice cream. Joanna Saltz from “Delish” and her team of taste-testers joined the show to determine which brand is the one you should go for. Nutritionist Keri Glassman was also on set to look at the nutrition and calories for the seemingly healthier ice cream.
Keri explained that a lot of people are trying gluten-free and dairy-free diets. Additionally, some people have a dairy intolerance. Keri even admitted that she eats it because of the taste!
Dr Oz: Regular Ice Cream vs Coconut Milk Ice Cream
Dr Oz and Keri compared the nutrition of a popular brand of vanilla ice cream to coconut milk ice cream and it turns out the coconut milk ice cream has less of everything. One serving of regular vanilla ice cream has 250 calories, 17 grams of fat, 20 grams of sugar, and 4 grams of protein. Coconut milk ice cream has 120 calories, 6 grams of fat, 13 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein.
So how is coconut milk ice cream made?

The first ingredient is organic coconut milk, then comes thickeners. The thickeners could cause GI distress in some people but a lot of people don’t have a problem with them. So what about the taste?
The three brands of coconut milk ice cream that were being tested were So Delicious, Nada Moo, and Coconut Bliss. The taste testers tried vanilla flavors of each brand. Coconut Bliss, which is 210 calories for 1/2 a cup, definitely has a stronger coconut flavor. On the other hand, Nada Moo has a much milder coconut flavor and is 120 calories per 1/2 cup. So Delicious is 140 calories per 1/2 cup and was very scoop-able. But as for which brand they preferred, it seems that Coconut Bliss came out on top!
Joanna admitted that if she had to choose between Halo Top and Coconut Bliss she would choose the Halo Top, but both are certainly great options and make for delicious treats.
